TC18: Glass Melting Technology

MAIN GOALS OF TC18

TC18 promotes both fundamental and applied research on phenomena connected to glass melting processes. It supports co-operation among technical committees involved in the cluster Glass Production. For example, the joint activity with TC14 regarding bubble formation (bubble nucleating temperature), or with TC05 (organization of SumGlass 2023 Summer School). One of the main missions of TC18 is to organize and conduct technical programming at conferences and workshops to facilitate the dissemination of scientific and technical information in the field of glass melting.

PLANS FOR 2023

TC 18 will take part in the organization of SumGlass 2023 – 3 rd Summer School on Nuclear and Industrial Glasses for Energy Transition, which will take place on September 25-29 th , 2023, in France. TC 18 endorses the participation at the conference for everybody interested in glass melting processes.

TC 18 will take part in the organization of the Challenges in Glass Manufacturing session at the 2023 Glass & Optical Materials Division Annual Meeting (GOMD 2023).

Activity in 2022

TC18 met during 26th International Congress on Glass in Berlin on July 3, 2019. During the meeting, Pavel Hrma presented a talk about the batch melting kinetics. TC members than discussed the ICG 2030 project – Individual membership. Following the completion of Jaroslav Klouzek nine-year long service as the TC18 Chairman, new TC Chairs have been suggested – Richard Pokorny was voted as the new chairman, with Irene Peterson serving as the Vice-Chair.

Activity in 2021

TC 18 took part in the organization of the Challenges in Glass Manufacturing session at the 2021 Glass & Optical Materials Division Annual Meeting (GOMD 2021).

Activity in 2019

TC18  met during 25th International Congress on Glass in Boston on June 9, 2019.

TC took part in the organization of  the “Glass Technology and Manufacturing Session / Raw Materials, Batch Melting, and Fining” of the 25th International Congress in Boston.

PROJEST ON BATCH MELTING KINETICS

Batch to glass conversion is a limiting factor for the entire glass melting process as well as for the efficiency of nuclear waste vitrification. TC18 currently plans to start a project the aim of which is to review current state-of-the-art approaches to glass melting modeling and to evaluate possible paths to simple but powerful physicochemical models based on physicochemical principles.

PROJEST ON LIQUIDUS MEASUREMENTS

In the past, TC-18 performed round-robin testing of gradient boat measurements for the estimation of liquidus temperature (Beerkens, R.G.C.; Conradt, R.: Round robin test on liquidus temperature of soda–lime–magnesia–silica float glass samples- A technical report of the ICG Technical Committee (TC 18) on Properties of Glass Forming Melts. Glass Tech.: Eur. J. Glass Sci. Technol. A, October 2008, 49 no. 5 pp. 205-212). The results showed significant deviations in the measured liquidus temperature. While the differences were attributed to possible differences in experimental procedures, no follow-up studies have been performed to address this issue or propose alternative testing methods. TC-18 will start a project to evaluate alternative methods of determining liquidus.
